The skills gap being experienced in the tech sector has been a heavily talked about subject among the tech community in recent years.

We recently wrote a blog recently discussing the digital skills gap and how tech organisations were responding in many different ways to get more and more people involved in tech based careers.

We mentioned how ‘Code Clan’ Scotland’s first digital skills academy has announced an exclusive scholarship to find out standing applicants through its first ground breaking coding course.

The scheme put together by Code Clan aims to create 20 work ready software developers after every 16 week course.

More recently, in the last month, UK leading holiday specialist ‘On The Beach’ launched their 2015 Ruby Academy, a programme that aims to help bridge the digital skills gap by inviting aspiring programmers wanting to develop their existing programming skills, through on the job training, whilst in full time employment.

Throughout the intensive six month training and development programme, Academy students will work closely with their On the Beach "Ruby Coach". Starting with a five week classroom based training course, delivered by leading Ruby expert Steve Tooke, candidates learn Ruby Syntax, Behaviour Driven Development, Object-Oriented Design, the Ruby ecosystem and more.

Following this, developers will be mentored by On the Beach’s Senior Developers, working in agile development teams on work-streams, delivering new features and experiences for On the Beach’s customers.

This is a great opportunity for candidates to get to grips with a new language, whilst getting valuable skills from seasoned software development experts.

Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to work with one of the UK’s leading travel businesses, which attracts a staggering 60 million visitors every year and has already sent over one million passengers on holiday since the start of 2015 alone.

Jonathan Smith, Chief Technology Officer Comments on the ruby training academy by saying:
“We are really proud of the culture and atmosphere here at On the Beach. Our relaxed environment gives our team the space and opportunity to grow and develop as individuals and to learn from the best techies in the industry.

It's our aversion to the ordinary that makes us what we are, a close knit, family oriented team of like-minded people who are constantly striving to find better, and more interesting ways to build fantastic software solutions.

The passion and talent of our people is what drives the business forward and we invest heavily in our team. I am really excited by and very much looking forward to seeing what our next group of Ruby Academy."
