New Year’s resolutions: Live your best work life in 2019!

We’re three days into the new year and for a lot of us we’re starting to make those annual New Year’s resolutions. 

For many of us, health and fitness are high on the list of priorities for the new year from being more active and fit, to eating more healthily. Alongside health and fitness other popular resolutions tend to be career orientated with many people setting their sights on securing the job of their dreams, getting that promotion, pay rise or being all round happier at work in 2019.

However, in order to achieve these career goals, more ground-work and preparation needs to be put in place as opposed to getting yourself to the gym or eating more vegetables. 

In this blog we’ll be providing some key points that should feature in your targets for the year ahead to help you live your best working life in 2019 and help you meet those career goals!

 

Keep a track of targets and monitor them


Make a note of the goals you want to meet. Create short-term, smaller goals that are going to help you along the way.

Set yourself daily, weekly and monthly targets. Once you are able to see that you are meeting your smaller targets this will increase your confidence throughout the year as you will be able to visualise and see your success. Also – if you are behind on a target or weren’t able to meet one of your smaller milestones you will be more aware and likely to make a conscious effort to stay on top of it in future. It will help you see patterns and recognise where improvements in your approach need to be made.

This monitoring will help you also organise yourself and prioritise your time which will also enable you to meet your goals, but also limit the stress that is sometimes associated with managing your time and working to different deadlines.

Stay motivated 


It’s a proven fact that being more active and healthier improves your mood and general quality of life.

Doing more exercise releases endorphins that boost your mood and make you more motivated after working out.

According to research published in Fitness Magazine employees who exercise regularly (a minimum of 150 minutes per week) are less likely to call in sick, have better attendance and focus better while at work!

Try and do some more exercise this year and see how it works for you and your motivation in the workplace.

Brush up your skills


Make 2019 the year that you brush up on your current skills and make sure you’re at the top of your game.

If you’re a developer – are you familiar with up to date relevant technologies that will help you do your job?

Maybe you are a Software Tester – what test tools are your peers using? Are you up to date?

Are you as efficient as you could be in your job? Are there things you could be better at that would make you more fulfilled and satisfied in your role? Why not work on these this year and see how this impacts your working life.

Learn a new tech skill

Try to keep stress levels to a minimum


Stress is at times an inevitable part of working life. While somethings can not be avoided, it’s important to not get het up on the minor issues.

Stress can make it harder for you to meet your goals so it’s important to understand what triggers your stress and if it can be avoided - learn how, or seek help if it is needed.

In the meantime, there are things that can counteract stress levels at work including exercise, making an effort to leave the working environment and get some fresh air over your lunch break, having breakfast, going to bed earlier and arriving earlier at work.

There are also a number of apps that can help users manage their stress and better handle symptoms of stress for example ‘What’s Up’ & ‘At Ease’ (both available on iTunes).

Review and update your social profiles


Social media profiles enable users to showcase different aspects of their lives, from their career on LinkedIn to their holidays/lifestyle on Instagram. 

Social media can be a great selling point to prospective employers, ask yourself in 2019 what your profile says about you? If your profiles are not set to private and available to the public is your image online the one you want to portray to potential employers?

LinkedIn is a great space to connect with other like-minded professionals in your industry. Users of LinkedIn often share advice with their network as well as other useful information and blogs. 

Hiring managers and recruiters also share news about upcoming positions, so it’s a great way to hear about exciting new roles hot off the press.

Being active on LinkedIn and connecting with the right people is a great way to raise your profile in your industry. Set up or update your profile today!

Attend more industry events


Attending more industry events will not only build your knowledge on a range of subjects in your area but will also connect you with other people in your industry. Events are a great place to meet people and build connections who may connect you to new roles.

Speaking at events is also another way to get noticed and build your career. If you are particularly knowledgeable about an area of your industry, why not share this with a wider audience? Event organisers are always on the lookout for guest speakers.

It’s easy to find out what events are happening when on websites such as Eventbrite, Meet-up and social media sites like Twitter and LinkedIn.

Ask for feedback


If you’re looking for a new role in the new year and take part in interviews it’s really important to ask for feedback if you weren’t successful in the process. By asking for feedback you’re able to correct mistakes and build your confidence.

If you aren’t looking for a new role but are keen to progress in your current role it’s important to ask your manager about your performance and what it is you need to work on in order to get to the next stage in your career. By asking about this, it will not only show commitment to your role but also will enable you to incorporate this feedback into your targets so you are clear in what you are working towards and what you need to achieve to get there.

Try to take more risks


Try something new in 2019 and step out of your comfort zone. Albert Einstein famously described insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

If you are not where you would like to be in your career, you need to be prepared to change things, try something new and step out of your comfort zone in order to achieve your goals!
