LDF AWARDS 2019: THE TECH EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST!

The Leeds Digital Festival Awards take place TODAY!

The LDF Awards celebrate the success of the digital and tech industry in Leeds and the wider city region over the last year. The thriving scene is not only home to start-ups and SMEs, but also much larger businesses where tech is at the heart of everything they do.

The awards will celebrate the organisations and individuals who are driving the vibrant industry and making Leeds a fantastic hub of digital innovation. 

With a matter of hours to go until the big night, we thought we'd take the opportunity to get to know our fantastic shortlisted individuals and organisations.

In this blog we find out more about the 'Tech Employer of the Year' shortlist, including reasons why they were nominated and some of their thoughts on being shortlisted...


First Direct




Here is a little bit about some of the reasons First Direct was shortlisted...

"First Direct have built a diverse team of IT professionals from experienced to young people starting out in their IT career.

- Cross functional teams working Agile and moving to a DevOps way of working.

- Sit close to our business colleagues  and work collaboratively to deliver the right customer outcomes working closely with product owners.

- Creating a culture and identity where we are becoming the IT team of choice.

- regular releases on the Mobile App ( 4.7 rated) includes apply journeys and recently launched pay key.

- Multiple award winners underpinned by an amazing IT team."

Panintelligence




Here is a little bit about some of the reasons Panintelligence was shortlisted...

CPP Group




Here is a little bit about some of the reasons CPP was shortlisted...

Here is what CPP had to say about being shortlsited...

"Our International Support Centre has been in Leeds for around 18 months and we’ve loved making new friends and becoming integrated within the Leeds Digital network. To be nominated for this award is such a compliment. We’re really proud of our unique development programmes and cultural initiatives that make CPP Group such a great place to work. We are a people business. There is nothing that makes us successful that is done without the initiative of our people, which is why we invest in the right culture and people to meet our growth aspirations. We have a welcoming, open and vibrant work environment, and yes…we also have an amazing coffee machine! Being in Leeds has given us an extra dynamic. There’s always a buzz being in the centre of the city and we’re proud to be recognised alongside some fantastic companies that are also shortlisted."

Netpremacy




Here is a little bit about some of the reasons Netpremacy was shortlisted...

The Data Shed




Here is a little bit about some of the reasons The Data Shed was shortlisted...

"CEO Anna Sutton has developed and leads the recruitment, learning and development strategies of the firm. This has enabled the company to grow rapidly without losing sight of its core values and original culture.

Staff are encouraged to mentor startup founders, especially firms that need more help with data issues. For example, Head of Architecture, Stewart Norriss, mentors George Biddle, founder of startup Signin.

The directors of the business also take one member of staff for lunch every fortnight, which is key for them to get to know all employees, especially the newer ones.

Fast growth can make it difficult for a young company to keep the original culture that the founders and early team members established. Cognisant of this, there is an established communication framework within the team that allows all new members of staff to be mentored by a senior member of the team.

All of the team who joined before November 2018 have exit only share options in the business. We plan to rerun this scheme later this year. 

Team members who go above and beyond the call of duty are regularly rewarded with surprises. We upgrade their rooms on holiday, send them away for the weekend with their partners or find other ways to say thank you (including the Thank You mug). Managers are encouraged to take their teams out for team building activities - junkyard golf, escape rooms… whatever floats their boat!


All staff are given feedback training to focus attention on continuous improvement. We are all responsible for each others’ growth.

Each team member also has a training budget that they can spend on going to events that they think will be beneficial to their development. The condition is that they share the knowledge at an open mic when they get back!"
