James joined Amsource Technology as a Recruitment Consultant in our Leeds office just over a month ago, in this blog he fills us in on his market, his first month, what he has enjoyed and some of the challenges he has faced...

Over a month has gone by since I took my first steps into the world of recruitment. I think now would be a good time to give you an update on how that time has gone and how I’m feeling about the prospect of a career with Amsource Technology.

Before I do that, I think a good place to start is to give you an overview of my background. Originally from sunny Southport over in the North West, I moved across to Yorkshire to study a History degree at Sheffield Hallam University in 2012. After three enjoyable years, I graduated in 2015 and then spent a further year working as the Welfare and Community Officer at Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union. This was my first experience of a full-time job and it taught me a lot about the world of work. Having finished that in 2016, I then decided to take a gap year where I enjoyed 3 and half months of backpacking in Southeast Asia and then moved back home to Southport. During that time, I decided that I was ready to crack on with my career and take my first proper step into the professional world.

My interest in recruitment was first ignited by my pal Alex, who started his career as a recruitment consultant in Manchester after graduating a year ahead of me. He told me all about his great experience and gave me a helpful insight. After considering it more and seeing the benefits it has to offer, I decided I wanted to pursue it as my chosen career. The thing that most attracted me was the opportunity to progress based on the effort I put in. In addition to that, I was motivated by the prospect of being able to help people into work, whether it’s a graduate taking their first step onto the career ladder or a seasoned professional looking for a new and more fulfilling opportunity. I’ve always liked helping people, and I know firsthand how stressful job searching can be. So, to my mind, if I can help make that process easier for a candidate then I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile.

After having a taste of the culture at Amsource during the assessment day back in June, I knew that they were the company for me. When the phone call came through from my Rec to Rec a couple of hours later, it was the easiest decision I’ve ever had to make. There was a real sense of togetherness and a productive environment that valued its members, where I felt that I could genuinely progress as a professional.
My first month at Amsource has given me an enjoyable introduction into the world of recruitment. During my first couple of days I was very anxious to pick up the phone and speak to candidates. I knew very little about Data Science and I was worried about coming across as a complete novice on the phone. Andy and the rest of the guys have been exceptionally supportive and have made the process a lot easier. They encouraged me, and the other juniors, to pick up the phone and learn on the job, asking more and more questions to expand our market knowledge. They created an environment where it was okay to make mistakes, but drilled home the importance of learning from those mistakes and always improving with every phone call. It’s this mindset that has encouraged me to interact as much as possible with the candidates in my market and to try my best to master the fundamentals of recruitment. So, on that note, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank my fellow colleagues for helping me out so far, with a special mention for Shane, who has had to endure mentoring me and with that an endless bombardment of questions.

Initial first week anxiety has been replaced with a much more confident and a somewhat knowledgeable voice on the other end of the phone greeting candidates and clients alike.  My first month at Amsource has been brilliant. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning my market and I’m genuinely excited by the prospect expanding my Data Science knowledge and really making the market my own. On the client side of things, I excited to work hard and expand my client base as I march further into my career as a recruitment consultant. If my first month at Amsource has given me a flavor of what’s to come, then I couldn’t be happier and I can’t wait to crack on.
