On Thursday 8th October Georgia and Andrew took the opportunity to attend TechNorth’s Northern Stars Event in Leeds.

The Northern Stars event concept is a Tech North initiative designed to support ambitious digital entrepreneurs from across the North of England.

The event held at Google’s Digital Garage at Leeds Dock gave the tech professionals in attendance a chance to network and get a feel for just some of the exciting digital developments taking place in our area and the future of tech in our region.

The event kicked off with an introduction from leading crowdfunding platform Crowdcube who are a sponsor of the Northern Stars event.

We were then treated to a talk by local Leeds Tech start – up ‘Parallax’ who talked through their history, and provided some top tips to future tech start-ups looking to pave their way in the digital market.

Then came the main event. The start-up pitches. Each start-up had three minutes to sell their business concept to us the attendees, where we would then vote for our favourite, the start-up who received the most votes would win an iPad courtesy of Crowdcube.

Flux brings a whole new element to billboard virtual advertising. Flux allows out of home advertising to react to its environment. Recently, Greggs teamed up to use Flux to make adverts adaptable to the weather, when it was raining deals on pizza slices were advertised, when it was sunny salads we’re advertised.

Save for a holiday are an App for iOS, Android and web that allows users to manage budgeting for a holiday more easily. The app invites users to simply say where they want to go, when they would like to depart and upload financial information and the app works to get the holiday you want.

A concept designed for students to help them find the sources of the material needed for their assignments more easily.  Like the Google of the university essay world.

A concept designed for busy parents. Packages are delivered to your door filled with activities to do with your children. Weekend box aim to teach children more about the world by doing activities rather than watching television.

It was great when watching the start-ups to get feel of just some of the exciting concepts that will be available to us as consumers soon. Despite them all being innovative, interesting, some much needed concepts, there could only be one winner of the iPad and that was Flux media.

The start-ups were then followed by some interesting discussion by Nick Seneca-Jankel (Author of 'Switch On', Speaker, Breakthrough Expert and Creator of Breakthrough Biodynamics) on the future of technology in the North and what will make future tech start-ups choose it as a base for their business.

Commenting on the event, our MD Andrew had this to say: “The TechNorth and Northern Stars initiative is proving to be fantastic in promoting the tech and digital industries here in Leeds and the other cities in the “Northern Powerhouse”.

It was great to hear from budding start-ups and to speak to more experienced professionals who were in attendance.

Having worked in the North’s tech community for over 10 years we know about the talent already here, and with TechNorth providing a national and international voice for the region we are certain now is the time for the tech industry in the North to boom.”
