Wednesday 19th August 2015

NIKE TRAINING

“Get fit with new Nike+ training club”
This free app is designed to keep users fit and motivated in their quest for a healthier lifestyle.

Downloaders can ‘’build their own crew’’ creating an online profile that they can add friends from and train anywhere and anytime.

Users can easily share workout moments, achievements and photos easily to social media outlets. As well as stream workouts from the app to their table or TV through airplay or HDMI.

WHAT DID WE THINK ?
"The reason I like the Nike Training app is because it is designed for everyone. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced levels with specific workouts to match each category.  For every workout you do you are given specific exercises that last between 10 to 60 seconds. This makes the exercises achievable however you also feel the benefit.  All you need to get started is a yoga mat, dumbbells, a resistance band, and if you have them, an exercise ball, stability ball, and jump rope."

"I feel that if you wanted to progress further with your training the app lacks variety in regards to workout selection and therefore once you have tried each exercise you will have to use other methods for you to truly reach your full potential."

"Great app and there are some great free workouts. The fact that you can stream it to your TV is really convenient and enables you to carry out a workout in your own home without the need to drag yourself to the gym."

"I found the user experience of this app really good. It was simple to access, and in terms of it's purpose - I'm on a break from fitness at the moment but when I'm back on track, I can see this app being a real motivator for me."

DUOLINGO

Learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Irish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, and English. Totally fun. Totally free.

"Far and away the best language-learning app." —The Wall Street Journal

"Duolingo may hold the secret to the future of education."—TIME Magazine

PC Magazine Editors' Choice for Language Learning: "Among iPhone apps for learning or practicing a language, you can't beat Duolingo."

"The most productive means of procrastination I’ve ever discovered. The short lesson blocks are painless and peppy, and reaching the next level (and then the level after that) becomes addictive." —Slate

Duolingo is changing the way people learn languages.

WHAT DID WE THINK?
"Great app! For those looking to learn a new language to learn, it’s great! Duolingo makes learning a language easy, they break it down in to bitesize chunks in each section. From learning simple everyday phrases, to learning specifics you are interested in. The visuals of the app are easy on the eye, and make learning a lot more interesting and amusing."

"I would recommend this app to anyone looking to learn a new language. One negative, although it’s initially a free app, to continue progressing through your language you need to pay for add ons to the app which can be annoying."

"User experience of this app is excellent, the visuals make it really easy on the eye and actually fun to continue learning. The sounds were clear, and not robot like which can be found on other translation or language apps , which makes it easy to understand."

WHAT DID WE THINK?
"Google hangouts is a mixture of Skype and WhatsApp taking the benefits of both and merging them into one really easy to use app. You can call 10 friends face to face simultaneously no matter where you are great for catching up."

"It's browser-based, so nearly anyone on any system or web browser can use Google Hangouts. It is incredibly intuitive so anyone can easily start using this video chatting service.  Voice and video quality are also great. The YouTube integration makes Google Hangouts fun to use."

"I didn't really understand this app, I use other messenger services such as whatsapp and I find them to be easier to use and fulfill the same purpose, for that reason, I won't be using it again."

IMDB

Downloaders of this app are able to find show times, watch trailers, browse photos, track must-see lists and rate their favourite movies and TV shows.

IMDb is the world’s largest collection of movie, TV and celebrity info. We aim to list every detail about every movie and TV show ever made, including who was in it, who made it, the plot, user ratings, trailers, photos, reviews.

WHAT DID WE THINK?
“Great app, used every time I want to watch a film. Great for making decisions. If it has more than 5 stars then it is worth a watch, anything less is a no no. “

“I use this app religiously, it helps to filter between rubbish movies/tv shows and ones worth watching when you’re stuck between a few or looking for ideas on what to watch. It is also helpful that there are reviews from both critics and normal users so you can get an idea of other people’s opinion before you decide if something is worth a watch.”

"IMBD app is great for when I recognise someone on something I’m watching and I know it will bug the life out of me if I don’t find out where else I’ve seen them (and if I like them, what else I can stalk them in!). The other useful thing is the film trailers and reviews if I see that a film is showing that I haven’t heard of, I can quickly tell if it will be worth a watch. The IMDB app would also prove useful for pub quizzes – not that I condone cheating"

BBC IPLAYER

This app allows downloaders to keep up with BBC tv on the go.

The BBC iPlayer app let’s users :

- Add shows to Favourites, new episodes automatically stack for you to enjoy later
- BBC iD to share your Favourites across your other devices
- Stream programmes on your TV using Apple Airplay
- Browse programmes by Schedule, Featured and Most Popular

WHAT DID WE THINK?

"Great app, it enables you to catch up on your favourite programs when you are unable to watch them. It is also handy if you want to watch something that is no longer on tv as there is an extensive backlog of previous BBC shows."

"Great app! I use it every morning whilst getting ready for work as all bbc radio stations are accessable through the app!"

"Sometimes the connection and sound quality would fail between 3G and 4G, however on Wifi it worked really well. However I would find this app mostly beneficial when for example - traveling / commuting therefore it's poor quality outside of Wifi may prove an issue for me."

UBER

- Request a ride using the app and get picked up within minutes. On-demand service means no reservations required and no waiting in taxi lines.

- Sit back, relax, and go anywhere you want. We'll email you a receipt when you arrive at your destination.

WHAT DID WE THINK?

“Despite their controversial image, I use the Uber app as I believe it is a quick and easy way to order a taxi. It is also cheaper than your standard black and white taxi and is efficient as you pay direct through your bank so there is no worries regarding having the right amount of cash or haggling a deal. “

“Drivers have almost all been great, and the in-app driver review allows you to warn other users away from bad ones, or recommend friendly ones!”

“Uber also carried out a promotion where they delivered free Ice cream around Leeds which we took part in and received some lovely free ice creams and Uber merchandise. “

"Use this app alot, drivers are reliable. I think it's a major plus that you can access driver reviews. Fills me with confidence after some of the horror stories read in the news."

SONGFLIP

‘’The most powerful music collector and player ever’’
Users are able to play their favourite music anytime and anywhere.
Key features of the app include : search for, artist, Dj , remix. Audio preview, users can add songs to a playlist with a single tap.
Shuffle function. Completely free.

WHAT DID WE THINK?
"Absolutely love it. Spotify is better. However it is free and you can listen to music offline on Songflip which you are not able to do on Spotify."

"Think it’s great that it’s a free option, for those that don’t want to pay for Spotify. However the sound quality in Songflip is notably poorer than that of Spotify."

"Some of us were unable to download the app on iTunes as it has been removed which raises the question of if what they were doing was legal, and if they had any rights to the music they were sharing."
